Buttterflies in Machu Picchu : “A fascinating space, where local residents have become protagonists in the conservation of their heritage” – Leonardo Serrano Gutiérrez, Director of the Butterfly Farm
the Wonder Machu Picchu, this millenary citadel of Cusco is impressive, and is surrounded by one of the most impressive ecosystems of the planet. The natural beauty of this environment has earned it the title of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity. Its mountains are home to an infinite number of species of flora and fauna, including multicolored birds, mammals, orchids, bamboo forests and an extraordinary “collection” of more than 300 species and types of butterflies, many of which are endemic and cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.
Inside the Machu Picchu National Park, you can find the “Mariposario” or Butterflies House. This project seeks a balance between conservation and sustainable development, through research, training and education of the species.
The Butterflies House of Machu Picchu has different spaces that you cannot miss during your visit. In the flying area you will find yourself surrounded by colorful wings: The butterflies fly freely and visitors can interact with them, as well as with the plants and other elements of their habitat. You will be able to observe the life cycle of the butterflies and, if you are lucky, you will see some of them emerging from their cocoon. At all times, visitors will be accompanied by specialists who will provide them with information about these incredible species.
In addition, you can show your more adventurous side by participating in one-hour or full-day activities in the surroundings. The Butterfly House invites you to reforest, release butterflies and other excursions that bring you closer to the biodiversity of this magical environment.
On the other hand, the Butterfly House of Machu Picchu has an interpretation center, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of discovering more species of butterflies. In the same way, it seeks to inform the relationship between these insects and the lives of people.
