This 3-day tour immerses you in the magic of the Peruvian Amazon, starting with an exploration of Lake Sandoval, home to otters and exotic birds. On the second day, you’ll navigate the Tambopata River to reach the Chuncho Clay Lick, where you’ll witness a colorful spectacle of macaws and parrots. The day continues with jungle hikes and an exciting nighttime caiman spotting adventure.
On the third day, you’ll enjoy a peaceful kayak ride along the river, surrounded by the beauty of the rainforest. After this experience, you’ll return to Puerto Maldonado, taking with you unforgettable memories of wildlife and nature. Below is the detailed itinerary.
Explore Lake Sandoval and journey to the heart of the Amazon rainforest
Our adventure in the Peruvian Amazon begins with a pickup from the airport or bus terminal in Puerto Maldonado. After a warm welcome, we will enjoy a typical breakfast before heading to the city’s port.
At 9:30 a.m., we will board a boat for a journey of approximately 1 hour along the Madre de Dios River, heading toward the Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon arrival, we will register at the reserve’s checkpoint and prepare for an exciting 1-hour walk along a boardwalk trail through the dense Amazon rainforest. Along the way, we’ll admire the incredible vegetation and listen to the unique sounds of nature. This trail leads us to a channel that connects with the impressive Lake Sandoval, one of the most fascinating destinations in the region.
Here we will board a traditional canoe to explore the lake and enjoy its biodiversity. During the ride, we may observe exotic birds, macaws, parrots, black caimans, monkeys, reptiles, squirrels, and insects, as well as the giant river otter family, an endangered species that lives in this protected area.
After exploring the lake, we will stop to enjoy a typical Amazonian lunch, wrapped in local plant leaves and served with a refreshing drink.
In the afternoon, we will return to Puerto Maldonado and continue our journey by land to Filadelfia, a 2-hour drive. From there, we will board a boat again and sail for 25 minutes on the Tambopata River until we reach our jungle lodge, a cozy refuge in the heart of nature. We will settle into our rooms and enjoy a comforting dinner, surrounded by the magical ambiance of the jungle.
Enjoy the jungle sunrise, the macaw spectacle, and the nighttime adventure
We’ll start the day at 5:00 a.m. with a warm drink to energize us for an exciting journey along the Tambopata River. For 1 hour and 30 minutes, we’ll travel upstream as the sun rises, offering a breathtaking view. Along the way, we may spot exotic birds, capybaras, caimans, and with luck, the majestic jaguar in its natural habitat.
Upon arrival at the Chuncho Clay Lick, we’ll witness one of the jungle’s most amazing phenomena: hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws (red, green, blue, and yellow) gathering on the cliffs to feed on mineral-rich clay. During this unique experience, we’ll learn about the ecological importance of this natural bird behavior. We’ll enjoy a camp-style breakfast with a spectacular view of the clay lick, staying in this incredible place until around 11:00 a.m.
After the visit to the clay lick, we’ll take the boat back downriver to our lodge in Tambopata. On the way, we’ll stop briefly at a checkpoint to explore a small educational museum that will help us better understand the region’s biodiversity.
After a delicious lunch at the lodge, we’ll set out on an exploratory walk through the Amazon rainforest. We’ll first pass through secondary forest and then enter primary forest, home to giant trees, vines, and creepers. During the walk, we’ll learn about the area’s main economic activities, such as agriculture and natural resource use. We’ll also have the chance to spot local species like brown capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys.
We’ll end the walk by climbing the Canopy Tower, the tallest tower in Tambopata, where we’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the Amazon basin. From here, we’ll witness a breathtaking sunset as the sky turns golden and orange, creating one of the best views of the jungle.
As night falls, we’ll embark on one of the most thrilling activities: night caiman spotting. We’ll cruise the river with a high-powered flashlight to search for black and white caimans along the shores. We may also see capybaras, and with some luck, an ocelot or jaguar near the water.
If you prefer a more immersive experience, you can join a night walk through the jungle. The sounds of the nighttime rainforest, along with the chance to see insects, tarantulas, scorpions, frogs, and snakes, will make this an unforgettable adventure.
After the walk or caiman spotting, we’ll return to the lodge in Tambopata for a comforting dinner and a peaceful night surrounded by the Amazon rainforest.
Explore the Tambopata River by kayak and enjoy the surrounding nature
The third day of your Amazon rainforest experience will begin with a delicious and energizing breakfast to prepare you for a unique activity: a kayak adventure on the Tambopata River or a nearby small stream. This experience will take you through stunning natural landscapes, surrounded by the lush jungle vegetation. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to observe local wildlife in its natural habitat, such as monkeys, exotic birds, and perhaps even capybaras. The tranquil environment and the beauty of the landscape will make this kayak ride an unforgettable experience.
After this activity, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious lunch that will recharge your energy for the rest of the day. Then, it will be time to begin the journey back to the city of Puerto Maldonado. We will transfer you to the airport or bus terminal so you can continue your journey home with unforgettable memories of the Tambopata rainforest.
While at the lodge, you will have access to our pool to relax and enjoy a well-deserved rest. Additionally, you can take advantage of our available hammocks to rest after the day’s adventure.
