Adventure in the Sacred Valley on the way to Machu Picchu
We begin at 5:30 a.m. with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. Our first stop will be the picturesque village of Chinchero, where local women will show you their ancient weaving techniques on looms. We will visit the colonial temple built on Inca foundations and explore the artisan market, ideal for purchasing authentic souvenirs.
We will descend to the salt mines of Maras, a labyrinth of 3,000 pink and white salt ponds carved into the mountain since the 15th century. You will learn how the community members extract salt from natural springs, a process that has persisted for generations.
We will continue to Moray, a series of circular terraces that functioned as an agricultural experimentation center. The Incas used these concentric rings to simulate microclimates and grow over 250 varieties of potatoes and corn.
We will have lunch in the Sacred Valley (included) and tour Ollantaytambo, a village that preserves its original Inca urban layout. We will climb to its ceremonial fortress, where they resisted Spanish conquerors in 1536.
In the afternoon, we will board the Expedition train (around 7:00 p.m.) for a 1.5-hour journey along the Urubamba River. We will arrive at Aguas Calientes, where we will have dinner (included) and spend the night in a 3-star hotel with a private bathroom and WiFi.
